IBM Security Expert Offers Tips For Safe Online Shopping

Bangkok--Dec 11--IBM With online shopping at an all-time high this holiday season, many consumers are asking one important question: Is it safe? Analysts predict that Internet consumers will generate about $2.3 billion in sales during the 1998 holiday season. While retailers continue to improve the security and privacy of information sent over the Internet, many consumers still fear that their personal and credit card information could be compromised. IBM Research's Charles Palmer, an "ethical hacker" and founder of the company's Global Security Analysis Lab, says on-line shopping is quick, convenient and safe if people follow five easy steps to ensure a secure digital shopping experience: Make sure the online retailer has a comprehensive privacy statement and security policy. "Most reputable companies clearly post privacy policies on their home pages," explains Palmer. "If the retailer doesn't thoroughly explain how they might use your personal i nformation and what security measures they take on transactions, you shouldn't buy from them." Look for a small key or lock in the bottom left corner of your browser. "If the key is broken or the lock is open, this indicates an unsecure connection," says Palmer. "When you're ready to 'check out' and you're asked to enter your credit card number, first make sure the key is whole or the lock is closed. If this is not the case, look around -- you may have to click a special button to access a secure server instead. If you cannot access a secure server, call in your order or go to a store instead." Beware of spam mailings that offer incredible holiday deals. According to Palmer, "These 'incredible offers' will abound this month, so remember the old adage: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." Stick with reputable sites and brands you trust. According to Chain Store Age magazine, 85 of the top 100 retailers operate online storefronts. "Large retailers such as L.L. Bean and Macy's now have comprehensive websites that carry many of the same items online as in the stores," says Palmer. "And new virtual shops that sell wares such as books, CDs and toys are becoming well-known and trusted by the public." Make sure that the retailer has a reasonable return policy. Palmer notes, "Anything you order online must be shipped, and can get damaged en route. Be sure the retailer has a generous return policy or money-back guarantee if the items arrive defective or damaged."
